Why was the plant non-union, and why did a series of organization drives fail?The reason why the plant was non-union is that the meatpacking industry has undergone a series of changes after economic challenges. Initially, meatpacking companies were located in urban areas near transportation access. The workplace was highly unionized and everyone was happy despite the work being physical, dangerous and demanding. Through what some call IBP revolution the industry shifted significantly in a bid to cut cost. Meatpacking companies moved their operations to rural areas close to livestock producers.
