Background and Problem StatementThe Albion River Bridge is located on California State Route 1 and crosses the Albion River in Mendocino County close to the town of Albion in California. The wooden deck truss bridge is suspended between two cliffs and overlooks the Pacific Ocean which makes it very scenic. The size of the bridge is 969 feet in length and 26 feet wide. Despite a concrete arch structure design being proposed, the bridge was redesigned and constructed in 1944 using timber and single-span riveted steel deck truss. The Douglas fir and railway steel used in the construction was recycled from an old bridge across the Feather River in South Fork.
