Birmingham police arrested King during one of the protests. While King was in jail, several white ministers criticized him for being too extreme and aggressive in organizing against Jim Crow. The letter is Kings reply to the ministers, in which he outlines his vision of non-violent direct action and his goal of a more just society. Instructions: Please answer the following questions in an informal 1 - 2-page essay: What did King mean by non-violent direct action? How did King justify his support for such action? Letter from a Birmingham Jail [King, Jr.]In his letter, Martin Luther King Junior wrote about non-violent direct action to refer to all the activities done in protest of someone or something. Usually, such activities do not include any form of confrontation with an intention to harm people with a different opinion to that of the protesters. Examples of such non-violent direct actions are sit-ins and marching through streets. According to King, non-violent direct actions would lead to the revelation of the prevalent injustice against the Black Americans in the American society. Failure to act, he argued, would result in the maintenance of the status quo which was oppressive towards the colored Americans.
