Instructions

The Civil War (1861-1865) fought between the Confederates and the United States of America caused the deaths of more Americans than all other wars combined. The Army of Northern Virginia (Confederacy) had lost the ability to engage in offensive operations by the Spring of 1864, but would fight a stubborn defensive war against the Army of the Potomac (Union) for more than a year. Finally, with his army on the verge of starvation and cornered by superior forces near Appomattox Courthouse in April 1865, General Robert E. Lee agreed to meet with General Ulysses S. Grant to discuss surrender terms.General Grant wrote his memoirs of these campaigns in his, The Personal Memoirs of Ulysses S. Grant, in a sparse, factual description of battles, terrain, and maneuvers between battles from his point of view as the field commander of Union forces. General Lee did not write memoirs or explain his actions. Several documentaries present Lees leadership from the Confederate point of view. One of the best is The American Experience: Robert E Lee; a PBS Documentary (at https://youtu.be/bHHR-M22Mwo ).Read the sections of Grants memoirs from the Battle of the Wilderness through the surrender at Appomattox. Watch the documentary on General Robert E. Lee. Write an essay comparing the experience and motivations of the two generals leading up to the surrender at Appomattox Courthouse. Explain how Lees fanaticism and Grants generosity affected them, their armies and their respective civilian populations. Use facts about the surrender; included in the memoirs and discussed in the documentary, to explain how history would remember the two men and the 4-year struggle.
