American HistoryQuestion 1The roots and significance of the Stamp Act ControversyThe root of the Stamp Act Controversy is that the British government wanted to collect taxes from their colonies in a bid to pay for the seven-year war. Britain found itself in debt after the war with the French after fighting them together with the colonies and thus felt that they should help in paying the debt. The Parliament tried to raise money through taxing the colonies directly instead of regulation of trade. To achieve this they passed the Sugar Act in 1964 which required sugar and molasses to be taxed (Bailyn, 2017).
