Outline four factors from your study of the Native American Southwest and the Spanish frontier Southwest that support Professor Treutts concept that the Spanish borderlands, from the 16th to early 19th centuries, were a contested terrain.

One of the factors that made the borderlands a contested terrain between the US and Mexico was the proximity. The borderlands in fact did not really distinguish the area which was part of the US and the area which was part of Mexico(Kemp 2015). The closeness was bound to bring issues because these borderlands were areas that belonged to the two countries. The closeness, for instance, facilitated the quick movement of people from one area to another, which allowed intermingling and would definitely raise issues especially issues that touched on the subject of jurisdiction.
