A good rule of thumb is to devote at least one sentence to outlining each body paragraph. 4.    At the end of your introductory paragraph, write a thesis statement. A thesis statement is the central claim that you essay is making. Each body paragraph should be structured around proving your thesis statement.Body Paragraphs:1.    Topic Sentence: Your topic sentence is like a mini-thesis statement; it should tell me what your body paragraph will argue. After reading your topic sentence, I should not be left in any doubt about what to expect in the following sentences.2.    Direct Quote, BRIEF description of plot point, or, if you are analyzing a film, a BRIEF visual description of a scene: Unless you need to explain important background or contextual information, you should insert a direct quotation almost immediately after your topic sentence. This direct quotation should prove your topic sentence and, by extension, your thesis statement in some way. A good rule of thumb is to include / analyze one quotation per body paragraph. 3.    Analysis / Close Reading: This is the most important part of your essay. In the following 5-8 sentences, explain how your quote proves your topic sentence. Look at how words, dialogue, tone, diction, and symbolism interact to achieve a certain effect or to advance a certain theme. Conclusion: 1.    Recap your argument. 2.    Reflect on your arguments importance.
