Generally, alcohol works by altering the brain chemistry. It affects both the excitatory and inhibitory neurotransmitters. An example of an excitatory neurotransmitter is glutamate while an inhibitory neurotransmitter is GABA. When one starts taking alcohol, the alcohol first triggers the release of glutamate making an individual hyperactive, talkative, and aggressive (Gutwinski, Heinz & Heinz, 2018). However, continued consumption of alcohol starts depressing the brain through the release of GABA and inhibition of glutamate. A person becomes drowsy with poor concentration and alertness. The process of self-abuse entails increasing consumption to maintain the feel of hyperactivity.
