Stanford Prison Experiment 1971Background of the Experiment The experiment was a social psychology study in which students assumed the role of prisoners and guards in a mimic prison setting. The objective of the experiment, which was funded by the US Office of Naval Research, was to determine if their atrocious characters influenced the guards brutality in the American prisons. However, the experiment halted after six days due to the escalated molestation of the inmates. The experiment involved twenty-four paid participants who were then divided randomly into two groups, prisoners and guards. Zimbardo (2019) described that two participants were reserved, and one dropped out, leaving eleven guards and ten inmates.
