How did slavery change over time in Virginia?Slavery in Virginia became more defined and stricter over time. In the early 17th century, slavery was complex in that both whites and blacks would be servants. During this period, the black slaves would be freed upon baptism and would also intermarry with the whites (Hening, 1809). However, things started taking a different course in the 1630s. In the 1630s, the English colonists began distinguishing between white servants and black slaves (Hening, 1809). In 1639, baptism for blacks was banned, getting rid of one of the ways through which the black slaves would gain their freedom. Between the 1660s and 1670s, laws were passed denigrating blacks.
