Steps were taken to support the Spanish rebels through the provision of weapons. President McKinley, however, stressed on diplomacy. The steps were inadequate, causing the sinking of "The Main, a U.S. battleship, following the retaliation of Spain. McKinley was pushed by the Congress to declare war, which resulted in a 4-month battle.
