Rigor motis is one of the processes that is associated with significant chemical changes. The process entails stiffening and developing of rigidity in muscles. It is triggered by the collapse of the respiratory system following a persons death. Anaerobic respiration is initiated leading to a reduction of ATP levels. ATP is a chemical that is responsible for the relaxation of skeletal muscles after their contraction. The pH of the skeletal muscles decreases due to the increased production of pyruvic and lactic acid. Anaerobic glycolysis continues until glycogen is depleted and the muscles cannot generate ATP any more.
