Scott is a 34 year old male who sought therapy to address issues related to his divorce and subsequent custody arrangement. Scott was married for 9 years to a woman who had numerous suicide attempts, public extramarital affairs, and drug overdoses. He describes the marriage as 9 years of catastrophes related to her instability. Police were often called to the home, and his wife had been hospitalized several times for emotional instability and/or suicidality. The couple had two children together, currently 7 and 9 years old.Scott and his wife divorced eighteen months ago. Though Scott expresses relief to have finally found the courage to leave a very unhealthy relationship, he expresses significant emotional difficulty putting one foot in front of the other each day. Scott's children have limited and supervised visitation with their mother, as per the court which deemed her unfit to have regular custody. Scott expresses feeling burdened by the task of single parenting and supporting the family on his limited income. He shared feeling socially isolated, as he does not spend time with other adults due to parenting obligations. Scott shared feeling alone in the parenting journey, as his ex-wife continues to display mental instability and is not capable of parenting appropriately.In exploring more about his functioning, Scott shared with the therapist that he feels that the future is bleak. He stated that he has no energy to explore hobbies which used to interest him, and no drive to try to socialize with old friends. Scott said that he often thinks about ending his life, but would not do so because of his children. Scott shared that everything feels effortful, and one day seems to blur into the next. He reports chronic sleep difficulties, and often feels tired. Since the divorce, he has lost 16 pounds.1.
