Rama vs. GilgameshAs the text begins, Rama is brought out as an epic hero whose encounters, values, and demeanor contrasts with those of Gilgamesh. The main difference between Rama and Gilgamesh is in their roles. Both are depicted as heroes, but Gilgamesh pursues a selfish quest to remain immortal after Enkidu dies (Oswald, 2016). Although the selfish motive is a cowardly undertaking by a king, he gained respect from the people upon return. After the return, Gilgamesh demonstrates wisdom out of the experience. On the contrary, Rama earned honor by respecting his stepmother. Instead of assuming the throne, Rama and his wife were exiled for 14 years. Rama never argued nor hit back.
