First Person 1. The history of embalming date back to Egyptian times when the preservation of the death body was important to guide the deceased individual into the afterlife for recognition purposes. The Egyptians used an assortment of salts and spices to help with the embalming process. Other methods of embalming before modern day embalming consisted of natural and artificial preservation. In many instances in the past when an individual was in the military, the body was dismembered and boiled down to the bone so the bones of the warrior could be return to his family members for proper burial. After the Civil War with the onset of modern embalming chemicals were used to help preserve the body longer and in a better state for viewing for the grieving family. The needs of the family was of great concern with the death of an individual and the modern day embalmer became more professional and had more rules and regulation to follow due to federal, state and local laws. So learning the history of embalming gives us as embalmers a historical blueprint of the importance of embalming based on the overall family needs regarding the death of a love one which is so very important in the embalming process. Second person 2. Learning the history of embalming makes you appreciate the skills and techniques we are taught as a modern day embalmer. The advancement of technology provides us with the skills to be thorough and produce the quality results that we are striving for. Understanding fluids that are no longer used today makes wonder if the type of fluid was replaced with something more effective or if the fluid produced no results to be more harmful than good. Either way having the knowledge and appreciation of the history of embalming will help you be a more proficient embalmer.
