Just as you correctly note, the process is physiological in nature and can be triggered by various factors be it chemical, physical, or biological factors. Unlike apoptosis, necrosis is not a physiological process, hence it is not programmed. The process of necrosis occurs when cells are subjected to injury. Various drug discovery and formulation processes are based on necrosis. An example is in chemotherapy where cells are subjected to radiation energy, which targets different cell processes leading to their death.
