The people coming into a funeral home are in need of comfort, and the funeral home's interior design can be vital in helping provide that to them. It's difficult to feel comforted in an environment where the colors don't facilitate it, so color harmony must be achieved. Another reason color is important in the funeral home, and arguably the most important reason, is the appearance of the deceased when viewing. Hopefully, good coloring will have been achieved with any embalming done, but there are some other things that can help give the deceased a more pleasing appearance. Good lighting with warm hues is the way to go. When we are alive, our skin is warm-toned--therefore, cooler-toned lighting should be avoided. Many funeral homes have lights in their viewing rooms that are tinted pink. Cosmetics are also important. It is important to match the skin tone of the deceased, but it's also important to make sure they still have that warm undertone that's needed. The color of the interior of the casket can make or break the warm tone that we need to achieve with lighting and cosmetics. When embalming the deceased embalmers will face discolorations such as disease related, jaundice related, and trauma related conditions. Things such as casket interiors and lighting play a positive and negative effect on the appearance of the deceased. How so you may ask? Lighting affects the appearance of the decease such as when the decease is in the casket and lighting is shone down on the deceased, certain lighting can create a dark and desaturated look. Fluorescent lighting can create a light which enhances the true and natural color of the deceased. Incorrect lighting can have a negative effect on the deceased and can cause a darker and less intense look. Casket interior can also present a negative or positive effect based upon colors and interior material. Things such as carpet and wall color in the funeral home can also effect the overall experience of people in attendance. I know its been my experience that dark and gloomy colors make me feel depressed but light and soft colors bring a certain glow and bright energy.
