At times our senses may deceive us regarding things hardly perceptible or far away. In the Fifth Paragraph of the First Meditation, Descartes tries to explain the difference between his dreaming and wake state. He begins by questioning his sleeping routine, and dreams. Descartes is not asleep but he convinces himself that he might be asleep and since the actions he does to prove that he is awake is actually similar with how he convinces himself in a dream that he is not dreaming.
