Although it was projected to cause the loss of more than 30,000 jobs in the Pacific Northwest's rural communities, logging was greatly reduced in 1994 to protect the northern spotted owl (Strix occidentalis caurina). After implementing the plan, jobs were lost. Debate exists, however, as to whether the recovery plan was wholly responsible for the loss of jobs. In addition, the owl population continued to decline. Week 3 discussionThe environment is an important element in the life of man and all living things. It is the interaction of the living things within the environment that creates a self-sustaining ecosystem. As a result, man needs to make efforts to protect the environment for perceived consequences and also to prevent other consequences that are not perceived. As a result, prevention of logging is justifiable to protect the owl population as they are part of the environment. Also, by protecting the owl population, the trees that provide immeasurable benefits to the environment would be saved. Else, if it was decided to keep people working at the expense of the environment, then, it would be to justify a short term goal of employment and instead bring more dire consequences in the long run....
