Local issue in sf Bay Area
Instructions
Each student will submit an 8-page (minimum) research paper, which focuses on a local issue impacting a racial or ethnic group here in the south bay area (or the area where you live, if you do not live in the south bay). The paper will be an original work, produced for this course and analyzed using information from the course. The paper will consist of 4 parts. Part 1- Introduction: Introduce the issue to the reader. What is the issue that you have chosen to focus on (general statement)? Why have you chosen this issue? What is the racial significance of this issue? ( i.e. How has race impacted this issue?) Why this issue is important to analyze to better understand the impact of race and ethnicity here in the Bay Area? (This is your thesis statement.) Part 2: History and Analysis: Give a summary of the history of this issue. When did it become an issue in your local area? Has the issue changed over time, and if so, how? If not, why do you think the issue hasn't resolved or changed?Analyze the issue through a racial lens. You may choose, and I encourage you, to use more than just race in your analysis. How has raced been used to understand this issue? What laws and/or policies have been enacted, maintained, or created to deal with this issue? What role has race played in those laws and policies. Part 3: Connected to the course material: What course material(s) helped you better understand this issue? And in what ways did it help you? How does understanding this issue, help us better understand the impact of race and ethnicity here in the Bay area and in the larger American society? Part 4: Conclusion: In your opinion, what needs to be done so that this is no longer an issue that people need to deal with? What can you do, right now, to help ensure this is not an issue ten years from now, 20 years from now, and 50 years from now? Issues: Here are some issues that you may think to analyze. Please know this is a very short list and there are more options, so please use these to help spur your ideas.Housing crisis/GentrificationWage gapEducational achievement gap (K-12 or Higher Education: choose one)Police brutalityHiring practicesPolitical activism ImmigrationVeterans' careJudicial sentencingWar on drugsHomelessnessVotingPoverty/Food insecurities
