Prior to the introduction of Christianity in England, the Germanic tribes that occupied much of what is present day England ascribed to pagan beliefs. The Anglo-Saxons believed in many gods including the sun and the moon and had their cultural and religious rites which they associated with these beliefs. Towards the end of the 6th century, Christian missionaries sought to spread Christianity to England in a bid to convert the pagan Germanic tribesmen and consolidate Romes influence in the region.
