Instructions

As an introduction to scientific writing and the use of peer-reviewed literature, you will write a two page report on an interesting plant, algal, fungal, bacterial or viral species (see below; for fungal, viral and bacterial species there must be a link to photosynthetic eukaryotic organisms). Prepare your two page report using at least four peer-reviewed papers as references. In the first part of the report, the reason why your species is of interest is given in detail; this should comprise at least 50% of the report (or in other words, one page of text). Examples of interesting plants include invasive weeds, endangered species, medicinal plants, nutriceuticals, plants producing novel drugs or unusual crop plants, plant bioproducts, genetically altered crops for biotechnology purposes, unique and unusual species, etc., etc. Your report should be based on the primary, peer-reviewed scientific literature that is found in journals and sometimes in books. Accessing this literature is very easy as most scientific journals and many books are now available online. You can easily obtain PDF copies of this literature free through the library by making very simple word searches or by using Google (if the library subscribes to the journal, you should be able to get a free PDF copy when you are connected to the University server on campus). The second part of the report is a biodiversity profile or fact sheet of the species emphasizing aspects other than what is featured in the first part. This section should include information under brief subtitles of taxonomic affiliation, life cycle (brief), habitat and ecological notes (or propagation for crops). This should be the other 50% or second page of text for your report.
