An Encounter by James Joyce An encounter is the second story in Dubliners, which contains fifteen different short stories written by James Joyce and published in 1914. The story features a narrator who remembers his boyhood experience similar to the one witnessed in the first story, The Sisters. The narrator plans with his two friends, Mahony and Leo Dillon to play hooky at their school. However, Dillon fails to turn up. Mahony and the narrator decide to leave for the game after which they meet a stranger who questions them on the types of books they had read and asks them whether they had girlfriends. The stranger crosses the field to the other side where he masturbates before coming back (Joyce 4). Surprisingly, he warns the narrator and tells him on the need to punish boys who misbehave...
