Romans owned very large tracts of land on which they did farming of food crops. The large land-owners preferred slave labor to free work because of many reasons. Firstly, high status among the aristocrats was accorded based on the number of slaves one owned (De Coulanges, 2012). Moreover, the landowners did not want free laborers because most of them were citizens of Roman society hence had a high chance of being called away to go serve as soldiers. The slaves were readily available for the large landowners since they were not used for military service.
