In this case, it was decided that the spirit of the Fifth Amendment of the US Constitution, did not give anyone the right to lie. The court also decided that the Fifth Amendment only allowed a person to remain silent but did not allow a person to give a false statement. In the case, the accused was challenging the decision of the appellate court where he had been found guilty of partaking in bribery and making a false statement. The decision was rendered to answer the fundamental question that the petitioner had raised.
