How are the versions different?Trent Reznor has a sorrowful feeling, that of a sick person who is losing the battle with illness. This is seen when Reznor's voice is fading in parts of the song. Johnny Cash's version has a darker feeling, expressing regrets of his life choices while visualizing his memories. How are they similar?The two versions express sadness; Reznor is unhappy that he is losing the battle to the sickness while Cash is regretting making the wrong choices in life.
