Directions:Persuasive ResearchIn the last module, we looked at how authors use rhetoric to persuade an audience to act in a certain way. This assignment asks you to now use what you have learned about rhetoric to persuade an audience to act or believe as you do.Topic: You may choose any topic you wish, provided that topic is something that is relevant to you specifically. The more specific the topic, the easier it will be for you to say something unique that adds to the conversation. However, if too specific you may not have enough research material to use. There are some banned topics that have been done over and over, so it would be best to find a unique way to look at those topics or skip that topic all together. Some of the banned topics are below. You must get your topic (Issue) approved by the professor first to avoid pursuing a banned topic. You should be selecting a topic that matters specifically to you, and perhaps even nobody else. In other words, consider solving a problem that is close to home for you. Here are some examples:EX: Perhaps you are planning to go into the medical field and are curious about the ethical problem of helping someone end their life and whether that should even be legal.EX: Perhaps you are trying to persuade your local city government that homeowners should have the right to object to and stop fracking near your home.EX: Perhaps your child's school has just signed a contract with a soft drink company to bring in vending machines and you want to persuade the school administration not to do this.*note that in all these examples, the purpose and audience are very specific and focused. Your paper can also be focused on a general audience.  Select a topic that matters to you and that has a specific purpose.Remember, choosing a topic that you care about makes writing much easier, even if initially you think it will be hard to research. SOME BANNED TOPICS: Abortion, Same Sex marriage, Capital Punishment, Legalizing marijuana, Euthanasia, Gun Control,  Banning Animal Testing, Banning Pit Bulls or other breeds, Amnesty for all Illegal Immigrants.  This is not a complete list.  Any topic that has been around for a long time needs to be tweaked in order to be able to do it.  Maybe take one aspect of the topic.  This is why you need to get your topic approved first.Consider your rhetorical context:Audience: Your topic selection should make choosing an audience easier. As you consider your topic, be sure you are thinking about whom you are trying to persuade.Purpose: To persuade your audience of your claim.Genre: An essay.Tips for Success:Be sure you include a clear thesis statement that explains the issue and your opinion on the topic.Be sure to include the counterclaims - the other side of the argument.Research: You will need to do research for this essay and use 4-5 credible sources, most of which must be academic peer reviewed journals. You will need to think about your issue and your research question and determine which types of sources will be appropriate for your essay. You will cite these sources using MLA style in-text citations and an MLA style Works Cited page. You must have one long quote of 5 lines or longer.  No more than one long quote.Do not use any sources that you don't know who the author is or their credentials. You may use medical journals, government sources, and internet books.  Do not use encyclopedias, blogs, Wikipedia, or Pro and Con.org.Be sure you make claims that are supported by clear reasons and relevant evidence/examples.However, your sources should support your argument, not make it for you. Remember to paraphrase responsibly and quote correctly where necessary. Nothing should be copied and pasted from a website. This essay will likely end up being 5-7 pages of text (not inclusive of visual elements or your Works Cited page).Writing ProcessBrainstormThink through all of the issues that bug you or are on your mind regularly. Come up with a list of themes/issues/questions.Freewrite about those issues: What do you think about them? How do you feel about them? Why does this issue matter to you?Narrow your list to just one or two topics. Come up with a list of questions that youd like to research the answers to. These should be BIG, open questions, and not just questions with quick, factual answers. Issues must be 2 sided with a clear "for" side and an "against" side. It must be a current debatable issue where there are credible experts on each side (represented by peer reviewed journals).ResearchChoose a question or two and begin to do some pre-search. This is a good time to consult Google. What is the current conversation about this issue? If you aren't finding two sides to this issue, you probably don't have a 2 sided issue.Narrow your issue to just one main research question. This is the ISSUE you will research for your essay. Dig in and really listen to the various perspectives about this issue. What is the conversation on this issue? What can you learn about it? All issues (topics) must be approved by the professor! Send emails with you issue choices.Research Issue PlanWrite the Research Issue Plan  assignment. Be sure your focus is narrow enough to hold a focus, but general enough to meet the page range. This argument should matter to you.Continue to refine your topic and continue your research looking for sources on both sides of the issue.  If you have too current of an issue, there may not be enough written on it yet, so keep this in mind.OrganizeBegin to compile your research. Be sure to include your own thoughts, ideas, and responses as you take notes on your sources.Develop a thesis. What is your opinion about this issue? What do you want to add to the conversation about this issue?Develop an outline to support your thesis. What supporting arguments will you need to develop in order to persuade your readers of your thesis? What evidence will you need to support these arguments? What does your opposition think and feel about this issue? Why? How will you refute their position? What evidence do you need?Return to the research phase whenever you realize you need more evidence to support a point or whenever you find you have a new question that hasnt been answered.DraftBegin by drafting the body paragraphs of your essay. Get everything on paper without judging. Resist the urge to edit, revise, and proofread while you draft.Make notes of places where you still need support from your research to provide examples and evidence for your claims. Go back to your sources (or find another source) and find that support.Draft your introduction and conclusion last.ReviseBefore peer review day in class, begin to revise your focus, development, and organization.Make sure every paragraph has a topic sentence that is directly related to and in support of your thesis.Make sure every paragraph develops just one main point of your essay.Consider the rhetorical appeals you use. Are they effective? Balanced? Do you offer enough evidence?Make sure you have analyzed your evidence and made connections for your readers.Make sure your paragraphs are in an order that helps lead your reader through your arguments clearly.Come to peer review day to give and get feedback on these essays.Revise based on the feedback you gain from your peers and from the Writing Studio or TutorMe.Edit and proofread last.Parts of the Assignment    1.
