Solutions Essay Instructions: This assignment has an optional group allowance. For this class, a group is defined as two or more people working together to complete an assignment. All members of the group receive the same grade, regardless of who completes what.Extra Credit: I will allot 5 extra credit points to any student who works in a group.File Name: The file name must be Last, First Name Solutions. Failure to save the file name correctly will result in a 5point penalty. If working in a group, each student needs to submit their own copy, with their own reflection paragraph.Format: Follow all rules under the tab How to Format Paper. Failure to format correctly will result in a 5 point penalty. Any PDF document posted for grading will be penalized 10 points. If working in a group, please add all students names to the heading.Assignment: You will write an argumentative article outlining possible solutions to a problem. The solutions may connect to one of the issues discussed in the presentations or one approved by me.Page Length: The argument needs to be 2-3 pages, typed, double-spaced. There also needs to be a Works Cited page (last page of paper, but not part of the 2-3 page requirement).Audience: You are writing an article for the New York Times. So, your audience is anyone who reads at a college level. Point of View: The argument is for a group of people, so do not use 2nd person (you, your) and stay away from 1st person(I, Me, My) too. Let the information you provide convince them. Stick to 3rd person objective.Sources: Students must use (meaning quote), and properly document, 2 sources in the paper. Students may use theinternet and/or the library database. I must see at least one quote from each source. The quotes and paraphrases must have proper lead-ins (verb or fully integrated) and have correct MLA In-Text documentation as well as a WorksCited page. Entries on the Works Cited page must be in alphabetical order by authors last name. Rough Draft: After the rough draft is complete, you need to submit it to Smarthinking.com. Grading Rubric: Make sure you read the grading rubric to know how the paper will be graded. Deadline: Please see the Course Schedule for the due date of the paper.Introduction: Write the introductory paragraph moving from General information (what is the problem? Is the problem global or social or a mix?) to focusing statements (why is it important, interesting, needing action?) to the thesis statement that outlines possible solutions.Body of the Paper: Write the body paragraphs remembering to stay in the order outlined by the thesis. The body paragraphs should explain the solution and how it will help solve or ease the problem.Use specific information from the required sources to support each point. There must be quotes from the sources in the essay. Depending on the topic, statistics might also be appropriate. The quotes must have a lead-in (verb or integrated). Also, remember to provide clear topic sentences, connect the details and quotes to the topic sentence and to re-connect the body points to thesis. Clusters might be used.Conclusion: Write the conclusion remembering to include a re-statement of thesis in different language and to summarize body points.Reflection Paragraph: write a paragraph, after the Works Cited entries, examining your process for writing this essay. What challenges did you face, any problems with source material or documentation, and was there any trouble meeting the time line? I will deduct 5 points if this paragraph is not completed.IMPORTANT: As with all assignments for this course, these instructions are not guidelines. In order to receive a passing grade, all minimum requirements must be met.
