Abstract Living organisms are composed of mostly water. Since water is solvent for most biological substances, it is termed as a universal solvent. The plasma membrane of the cell is semi-permeable hence allows some molecules to pass. There are two process processes that are involved in the movement of substance in the cell membrane, namely diffusion, and osmosis. The experiment investigated the factors influencing the rate of osmosis and diffusion. Diffusion of three dyes Malachite Green, Congo Red, and Nigrosin that have different molecular weights were investigated. There was also an investigation of the impact of temperature as the diffusion of this dye was done at room temperature and cold temperature (50C).
