All essays should be in MLA format, double spaced, with a 12 point font. It is fine to use outside sources like the Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy (see the "Helpful Links" tab on the homepage) when studying philosophers, but when you write your papers dont directly use material from any source. Close all your books, put them away, and write your essay. Do not quote from sources in your essay. I can tell if you are rewriting a passage, lifting a passage, using something from another source. I want your words, not the words of somebody else. The more you write on your own, without sources, the quicker you will find your own voice and think more critically about the material you study. Hard determinism refers to a concept that asserts that every human activity or action is predetermined by external and internal forces beyond human power. The theory asserts that everything we engage in is influenced by nature (Westacott). Therefore, whether we like it or not, some actions cannot be controlled or prevented because they are predetermined by forces greater than us. For example, a thief who steals any item is forced by nature to do so. For instance, because of the lack of resources resulting from the harsh conditions of nature, the thief is forced to steal to satisfy his needs. His actions were not a result of free will but the consequences of nature. Hence, there is absolutely nothing the thief could have done to stop him from stealing.
