DVD COVER DESIGN Type as Image Come up with a hypothetical film and create a purely typographic and symbolic solution for the cover. The cover must communicate the voice, tone, and theme of the movie. You will createentirely typographicallya complete DVD or Blu-Ray package front, spine and back. Do not incorporate any photographic or illustrative imaging into the design. An InDesign template for a DVD cover is attached. Write-up describing the film in brief. The film description will determine the overall design style of the DVD cover. Keep in mind what the proportions of the cover should be (if you open up a DVD case and lay it flat you have the front, spine, and back areas all in one horizontal format). Your sketches can be rough but should clearly show strong and different design directions. They do not have to include every little detail, but you should indicate the general location of all of the content. This will help you narrow down your sketches to develop your comps. Pay particular attention to the cover, and think about how you will create a focal point using type as image. Write a brief description of the overall feeling the design of the DVD cover should convey. Identify which sketch you prefer and explain why. Your Comps need to be computer generated. The more developed these are, the better feedback you will be able to get. The point is to solicit feedback at this point and go the extra mile for the final. Consider the following questions when developing your three comps (MINIMUM) from the roughs: Which concept is the most clear? How well does it satisfy the design objective? Which features of each concept are most visually appealing? Which concept do you prefer? Why. Explore the relationship between type and color in different ways. Review how changing the size, weight, style, and spacing of type can achieve texture, tone, visual hierarchy, and emphasis in a layout. As you learned in the previous projects, a great deal of tonal variety can be achieved in a layout with black ink alone. Texture The size, weight, shapes, and spacing of letterforms can simulate a sense of texture on a page. The juxtaposition of blocks of text comprised of different sizes, weights, and so forth can emphasize the sense of texture. Tone When typographers use the phrase color of type, they are often not speaking about the color of the ink being used. The color of type may also refer to the perceived tonal value of the copy. The tone of type is closely related to the perceived texture of type and varies depending on the typeface used, the type size, and spacing. Other terms used to describe this phenomenon are lightness and darkness of the copy and how black the typeface is. Emphasis An object can be emphasized in a layout by using contrasting size, contrasting color or value, contrasting texture, contrasting shape, or contrasting orientation. Visual Hierarchy Visual hierarchy emphasizes important information and leads a viewer through the content in a layout. Contrast in tone, texture, size, shape, or orientation can be used to establish a visual hierarchy. Color functions in two basic capacities in respect to typography. One, color can be used to further emphasize the mood or feeling the type is meant to convey visually. Two, color can be used to increase legibility and readability and to establish a visual hierarchy. Just as you would consider the physical attributes of a typeface (the line, shape, mass, texture, and tone) when selecting type for a design, you would also consider the properties of a color to determine if it is a good choice for the layout. Color properties include volume, excitement value, temperature, and symbolic value. Points to consider: The different psychological effects that the correct use of typography can produce. The importance of establishing a mood or desired look with the creative use of typography. The proper type fonts to match specific target markets. The necessity of visual continuity in producing projects that employ typographic designs that have impact and are still readable.
