Perhaps more than any other event, the Salem Witch Trials from 1692-93 remains a landmark of religious superstition, intolerance, and horror. What actually took place in the relatively sleepy town of Salem Village 1692 that resulted in over 80s executions (the death of Giles Corey, who refused to stand trial, was particularly cruel and unusual in that he was slowly suffocated with one stone being placed on him upon another)? Religious intolerance, superstition, false accusations, and forced trials for being a religious hardliner dates back to the Salem Witch Trials of 1692. The infamous trials began in 1962 during spring when young girls in a village called Salem in Massachusetts claimed they were possessed by evil spirits and accused some women in the village of being responsible for practicing witchcraft that landed them in the problem (Corbett et al. 73). That led to the convening of a special court to hear the claims, and Bridget Bishop was first convicted for witchcraft and hanged. Thereafter, several other trials followed, with victims coerced to admit or face death.
