Brain Death DiagnosisBrain death is diagnosed using apnea test, ancillary test, and physical examination. Physical examination includes an assessment of brain reflexes. If a person has lost response to central pain, it can indicate brain death. During physical assessment to diagnose brain death, noxious stimuli are applied to areas such as a supraorbital notch, upper trapezius, sternum, or ankle of the jaw (Drake, Bernard & Hessel, 2017). Other confirmatory tests associated with physical examination are loss of corneal reflex, loss of gag reflex, loss of cough reflex, and loss of light reflex.
