Consequentialist theories claim that the morality of an action can only be judged by the consequences it brings. Examples of consequentialist theories include utilitarianism, altruism, and ethical egoism. In utilitarianism, actions are judged based on how much they benefit the majority (Matthews & Hendricks, 2020). What this means is that an action is considered moral if it produces the greatest good for the majority of the population. An example is an individual who sees a house on fire and instead of going in to help decides to call the fire department. If he had gone in, he would have possible saved some people and property. However, by calling the fire department the chances of saving more people and property are much higher. Waiting for the fire department led to the greatest good...
