American HungerIn American Hunger, Richard Wright talks about the life he led in Chicago Illinois in 1927-1937. Although slavery had ended in the previous century, the details provided in the book show that he lived in a time of new slavery. It was the time of racial segregation. Since the laws were clear that slavery was a crime, whites found a way of advancing it through institutional practices (Annadurai 99). The main aim was to prevent Africans from enjoying the freedom which they attained following the end of slavery. Richard also established that, while blacks managed to move from the southern plantations, they did not have it better. They only managed to move to the urban shanties. All the same, their lives never changed much as they become exposed to a whole new form of challenges...
