It was named after the village in which it occurred, which is located in Lorraine, France. About 5,237 people were killed in battle. The units of the German forces involved in the battle include the First Army and the Second Army (Kelly 24). Those of the French forces were Army of the Rhine. The Germans appeared to have an upper hand, especially, based on the military strength which they had. For instance, the Germans had 188,332 personnel while the French had 112,800 personnel.
