That is why we witnessed a major fight to determine the legality of same sex marriages. In the decision of June 26, 2015 the Supreme Court resolved that particular issue.What follows here, however, is not an examination of the morality, legality or ethic of same sex marriage. Rather, it is an examination of what laws exist within your home state regulating the diverse fields which constitute the realm of family law: marriage, divorce, child custody, alimony, child support and other domestic issues. Here you will be asked to examine a variety of family law hypotheticals and determine the outcome based upon your interpretation of the laws of your home state. Before we embark on that series of exercises, however, you will need to determine what the law is within the jurisdiction of the state in which you reside. Remember, marriage is a contract. State law governs the law of contract. Contract law requires that certain important contracts be in writing (under the Statute of Frauds). Details of what that writing requirement is and what other regulations apply may vary by state.In your initial posts:Determine what statutes regulate the formation and dissolution of a marriage within your state of residence. (To do this, you may Google, bing, call a friend, call a legal professional, etc.) Identify these statutes for your classmates by their appropriate statute citation and title.Once you have found these statutes, tell us how to get married and how to get divorced in your state. Keep this fairly simple. What steps do we need to follow, under the statutes, to affect a marriage? What steps do we need to follow, under the statutes, to dissolve a marriage?
