What constitutes proper grammar and spelling should be obvious (although always double-check the results of your spell checker!). However, proper organization of a paper is not always obvious.  The purpose of a scientific paper is to make or defend a particular theoretical claim or thesis, or to report the empirical results of a scientific study testing two or more hypotheses in the context of a background theory. Well-organized papers & essays generally begin with an introduction that provides background for the particular thesis/claim to be defended in the paper. Then the intermediate sections provide various points of support for the main thesis/claim. Each of these points should be made in one to two paragraphs of text (more if needed) that begin with a statement of the point to be defended followed by logical argument and example data supporting (or refuting) that point. Good writing also includes smooth transitions between the different sections of a paper. Finally, the essay/paper should end with a discussion section briefly summarizing the main thesis/claim, its support (or lack thereof), and how future research/study could resolve current unsolved questions and outstanding issues. concepts/evidence?
