Letter to an Author: Continuing the Conversation
Instructions
New knowledge is produced through conversation and debate. This is to say, we produce knowledge and come up with new ideas by standing on the shoulders of those who came before us and by engaging in mutual inquiry with others who are concerned about the same topic or issue. In this assignment, you will help continue the conversation on safe spaces by writing a letter to one of the authors we have read in class (Dean Ellison or Professor Guterl) and bringing to their attention an additional perspective (one of the three supplementary essays by Shulevitz, Shapiro, or Bovy).Your goal is not make an argument in favor or against Ellisons or Guterls position, or to make a new argument, but to pose questions and identify new connections that may help the author either build upon their idea or to rethink a particular position or point. To do this, your task is toBring to the authors attention another perspective on safe spaces.Offer how the supplementary perspective suggests ways of extending or rethinking the authors position.Your letter must include:An introduction that explains to Ellison or Guterl that you have read their essay, creates goodwill with the them even if you disagree with their position, and explains your purpose in writing them (to bring to their attention another perspective).A summary of their position. Be sure to employ both paraphrase and quoting.Summarize the supplementary perspective, being sure to show how it adds support or challenges Ellisons or Guterls position.
