CASE  #1Virginia Royce was in her second year of teaching at College View High School. Her performance ratings for year 1 were rated very good in all categories. She had gained the reputation as one of the schools most promising new teachers. At the close of school on a Friday in October, Mrs. Royce went to the principals office and asked if Mr. Henson, the principal, was available. The secretary answered in the positive and indicated that she was certain that he could visit with her. Come in Mrs. Royce, directed Principal Henson. Whats on your mind on this late afternoon? Something has been troubling me for several weeks, answered Mrs. Royce. So far this semester six football players have been absent from my English class for the last period of the day on three occasions and on two occasions they were absent for the full afternoon to play in out of town games, so they had to miss two other teachers classes as well on those days. Pep rallies generally are held the last class period of the day before games; it all adds up to the question of what is really important around here.  PLEASE ANSWER THE QUESTIONS BELOW FOR CASE #1 What does this problem suggest about the culture of this school?  What can a superintendent do to improve upon this issue?  What role should football have in a school?  CASE  #2 Arent You Working Too Hard, Scott?Randall Scott was enthusiastic about his new teaching position at Union High School. It had been a difficult task completing his BS degree in math while working part-time and raising two young sons. He was assigned to teach four classes of 11th-grade algebra and one class of geometry. Although first-year teachers often are excused from extra duty assignments at Union, Randall asked if he might serve as sponsor of a math club and also as an unpaid junior varsity basketball coach. These assignments were granted. Nora Belle, district curriculum coordinator, sent a memo to all math teachers regarding the initiation of a curriculum committee to work on the revision of the math curriculum during the ensuing semester. After conferring with his principal, Emory Ross, Randall decided to volunteer for the committee and was named as a member. Randall thoroughly enjoyed the math curriculum work. He took the leadership in completing two special committee projects and also chaired the textbook selection committee for 11th-grade algebra. Randall was beginning to think this was his best year ever. His performance ratings as a teacher were excellent, and this added to his satisfaction. At the monthly faculty meeting, Principal Ross made some brief remarks about special activities of several staff members, including the several contributions of Randall. At one point, the principal, asked if anyone might be interested in working with a representative parent group on student discipline. One faculty member commented softly so that only those at his table could hear, Let Randall Scott do it, hes got all the ideas. On the way out of the meeting, one faculty member said to Randall, Say, Scott, arent you working too hard?PLEASE ANSWER THE QUESTIONS BELOW FOR THE 2ND CASE STUDY Comment on the case generally. Do you find the situation realistic? What do informal groups in school settings do to control the work setting? What can be done to control these informal controls through effective use of the principle of authority and peer influence?

Answer

This implies that the school has a good foundation in promoting talents. Therefore the school has a culture in talents promotion by allowing the students to attend the gaming functions. However, there is a need to consider both curricular as well as co-curricular activities. Therefore, there is the need to balance the extent to which the students attend the gaming activities as well as the time spared for classwork. Following missing of the classes, the superintended personnel can organize special lectures to help these students to recover the missed classes. Football in a school setting should be used to promote and identify the talents among students. Students...
