GoalThe goal of this assignment is to propose a thesis (an interpretation or argument) on a given topic in philosophy of art and provide an argumentative defense of this thesis. Digressions are omitted or relegated to footnotes.        If technical vocabulary is used, its use is defined.        I explicitly provide evidence from my primary source(s). Primary sources are here considered as the required readings.        In-text citations are included for all sources, primary and secondary, which include page numbers not just for quotes but for paraphrasing as well.        The argument anticipates possible objections.Conclusion         The Conclusion restates the thesis.        The Conclusion contains a summary of key arguments that defend the thesis.        The Conclusion summarizes how these arguments relate to or defend the thesis.Relevant Secondary LiteratureAs it states in the syllabus, a successful paper (receiving a mark of 85% or higher) will be able to incorporate material from at least one relevant peer-reviewed secondary source about the required readings in the course.     This means that the most that a paper can receive without consulting secondary literature is 85%, but this does not mean that a paper that consults secondary literature is guaranteed at least that mark.     In what follows, I will explain what I mean by relevant secondary literature or relevant secondary source.        A relevant source is a peer-reviewed article published in a scholarly journal, or a book (or chapter thereof) published by a scholarly press or gallery or museum.        This relevant source will propose a thesis and defend itthat is, it will attempt to persuade the reader to agree with the thesis.        In a relevant work, the author also often begins by assessing previous writings on the topic and develops or relates their thesis in relation to previous writings (or, in some cases, explains why nobody has properly addressed the topic).        Most importantly, this work is specifically related to topics in the required readings assigned in the course.Using Secondary Literature: Checklist        In the Body, the paper should explicitly engage with secondary literature; that is, I either use claims made by another author as evidence for my argument or build my argument by critiquing the claims of another author.         First, I introduce the over contribution or thesis of the relevant source: what its about.        Then I explain the particular feature of the relevant source that bears on (is important or relevant to) my discussion.        Then I account for or evaluate the contribution of the relevant source. That is, I explain how the relevant source relates to my argument. Things to consider: does it confirm or support my argument?
